John LaFarge Jr., SJ d Nov 24 1963. A longtime editor at he was for many decades one of the leading Catholic champions of "interracial justice." In 1938 Pope Pius XI asked him to draft an encyclical on the subject: "Say what you would say if you were pope."
Conversation
The encyclical *Humani generis unitas* ('On The Unity of the Human Race') was a strong condemnation of racism and anti-semitism. It was presented to Pius XI, but never released, owing to the pope's death in Feb 1939. His successor, Pius XII, shelved the document.
