Unpopular opinion: The subtext of editorial ridicule in this piece is not lost on the subjects, and empowers their determination to own the folks who are laughing. Obama ridiculed Trump once and we’re living his revenge. You don’t change hearts by laughing at people.

I agree with your last point but I didn’t detect that tone or intent. These folks seemed eager to explain Trump’s appeal to them, despite his not truly reflecting their declared values.
Lines like “she scooped a chip into sour cream dip and plopped into a chair” strike me as code for flyover country stereotypes. But I may have my filter set too high. Not defending these folks and their views. Just wishing it weren’t so obvious that we write them off.
