Unpopular opinion: The subtext of editorial ridicule in this piece is not lost on the subjects, and empowers their determination to own the folks who are laughing. Obama ridiculed Trump once and we’re living his revenge. You don’t change hearts by laughing at people.

I agree with your last point but I didn’t detect that tone or intent. These folks seemed eager to explain Trump’s appeal to them, despite his not truly reflecting their declared values.

The power may be an illusion, but they certainly feel "affirmed"--and it doesn't seem to matter whether it is actually sincere!
I was taught that Christians must have humility. Just supports my theory that evangelicals are not actually Christians--they believe in the Old Testament (pre-Christ), not the New.

When Chris Hedges wrote of Christian Fascism in the US he was ridiculed by some, but as usual he was ahead of his time.

It’s important to acknowledge Christianity has been a violent religion since Rome made it their state religion in 323 AD. Imperialism, torture, genocide, racism, segregation have all been justified in the name of the Christian Church. That evil is in the DNA of Evangelicalism.

Trump is the reincarnation of Adolf Hitler. Many white evangelicals are reincarnated nazi Germans who worship their old fuhrer again. The nazis also thought that Hitler was sent to them by God to make Germany great again. Putin fits the profile of Joseph Goebbels...
