75 years ago, on the night before August 6, 1945 the people of Hiroshima slept, not yet knowing it was possible to burn a city with a single bomb. Now we know. But as Baldwin wrote, “People find it very difficult to act on what they know.”

My father went ashore in Hiroshima 6 months afterwards as a member of a medical team. Then to Nagasaki for the same purpose. He'd been a medic with Marines in island fighting of '43 and '44. He said he was completely unprepared for the horrible injuries of the survivors.
