In a lifetime battling the slave trade Wm Wilberforce constantly contended with the argument that slavery was a necessary evil—vital to the Carribbean economy. He worked for 20 yrs abolish the trade and another 25 yrs to abolish slavery altogether in the British empire.

William Wilberforce d July 29 1833. A member of Parliament, devout Christian, he believed slavery was the greatest moral blight on the English conscience. He campaigned tirelessly to abolish the slave trade and eventually to free 700K slaves in the British empire in 1833.
