Feast of St Dismas, the name attributed to the “penitent thief,” crucified beside Jesus, who said “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus replied: “Truly I say to you today you shall be in paradise.”

A reminder that physical proximity to Jesus was no guarantee of salvation. Those who taunted him on the cross or pounded the nails in his hands were just as close. But words of true faith—even uttered in the last moments of a wretched life—could open the doors of paradise.
