Memorial of Pedro Arrupe, the great superior general of the Jesuits who died on Feb 5 1991. His belief that the gospel requires effective solidarity with a suffering world had roots in his early years as a priest. Assigned to Japan, he was present in Hiroshima on August 6 1945.
