90th birthday of Bishop Thomas Gumbleton. When he was installed as auxiliary bishop of Detroit in 1968, one of the youngest US bishops and a rising star, he opted for the path of radical discipleship. He was never elevated to his own see.

Yet he left a lasting mark as a founding pres of and helping draft bishops’ historic pastoral on nuclear war. An international ambassador for peace he has been an advocate for the poor, victims of sex abuse, women and LGBTQ in the church.
