The effort to unmask the whistleblower is not intended only to retaliate against him/her but to discourage future whistleblowers and to render statutory protections moot.

Oh yes, because the 6th amendment means nothing.
We always like to let people throw out accusations destroying peoples lives and careers on a whim or in retaliation and then protect them from ever answering for their claims or actions.
Love to play lose with the Constitution?
Whistleblowers are protected from retaliation, not from having their identity revealed.
You want to discourage future whistleblowers? Do what Obama did... prosecute them. Should also note Obama did more than call the the press "enemy of the people".
