In prison pending execution in 524 St Boethius, an avid student of philosophy, composed a treatise in which he imagined his dialogue with Philosophia. She describes life as a turning Wheel of Fortune—sometimes up, then down. Deliverance lies in drawing close to the still center.

Boethius’ “Consolation of Philosophy,” one of the most popular books in the Middle Ages, later inspired a popular game show. In this version however the goal is merely to guess the missing letters in a word or phrase, such as: THE E*PER*R HAS N* CL*THES.
