St. Christina the Astonishing (d 1224) suffered a severe seizure and was pronounced dead. She awoke in church in her funeral Mass and flew "like a bird" to the rafters. She related an extraordinary story.

She said that after viewing the souls in purgatory she was led to heaven and offered a choice: to remain in heaven or to return to Earth to accomplish a mission of charity and suffering. Without hesitation she agreed to return. Some thought her mad. Others, a holy prophet.
Sounds like an NDE, near-death experience, to me—certainly there are interesting parallels.
