Elizabeth Feodorovna, a German princess, married the younger brother of Tsar Alexander III of Russia. As Grand Duchess, she embraced her new culture and converted to the Orthodox faith. Her sister married Tsar Nicholas II. After her husband was murdered she forgave his assassin.

She founded a religious community, the Sisters of Love and Mercy, to serve the poor and sick. Their rule was based on the words of Christ, "I was hungry and you fed me..."In April 1918 she was arrested. On July 18, she was hurled into an abandoned mine shaft and killed.
