Joan of Arc, tried by an ecclesiastical court and convicted of witchcraft and heresy, was burned at the stake on May 30 1431. In 1456 an ecclesiastical investigation absolved her. She was canonized in 1920. Among sts, the unusual distinction of having been executed as a heretic.

It took almost 500 years for her canonisation. That is half a millenium. Why do long if she was a saint and not a heretic. How could anyone in 1920 know more about her then than those in 15th and 16th centuries. I’m baffled.

I appreciate this memorial about my father by @ggrenwald above any I have read today--for his comprehensive review of his bio & history, for his attention to themes generally overlooked about his post-Vietnam life, but particularly for deep appreciation of his human qualities.🙏
