St Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna, was martyred in 155. It was said that his was a “martyrdom comfortable to the gospel”—that is, a mystical re-enactment of Christ’s passion. He was said to stand praying amidst the flames “as bread baking or as gold and silver refined in a furnace.”
