July 28, 1981, Fr. Stanley Rother, a priest from Oklahoma working in the Indian village of Santiago Atitlan in Guatemala, was murdered by death squads. He was beatified in 2017. "At the first sign of danger the shepherd can't run and leave the sheep to fend for themselves."
