Simplest way to restore and renew a cast-iron skillet is to build a campfire and put it in the fire, then rake the coals over it and burn it clean. Then, after thorough washing, re-prime the pan by boiling vegetable oil or lard in it, pour it out, and wipe it clean, ready for usehttps://twitter.com/kittenwithawhip/status/1051509635272888321 …

2/ The high heat of fire drives O2 molecules out of rust and carbonizes, then burns away the carbon of all organic molecules, leaving a white ashy residue that easily wipes away; same as a self-cleaning oven but at much higher temperatures.

And for those of us without access to a campfire (I live in Brooklyn), this oven, salt, flaxseed, and muscle method works really well:https://www.myrecipes.com/extracrispy/save-cast-iron-skillet …

Such a perfect response Kat. I’m almost surprised he didn’t also recommend a convenient stop to the neighborhood blacksmith.pic.twitter.com/HBvzEIGEX6
