Day 1: 20% of incarcerated Americans are HepC+, 30% of HepC infected persons in the US spend at least part of the year incarcerated. Only a fraction have been treated. People are routinely denied treatment d/t COSTS & stigma. This is unacceptable and morally wrong.

Day 2: Infections d/t injection drug use climb each year. Skin & heart infections can be prevented w/ harm reduction strategies like syringe exchange programs & supervised consumption sites. Time for federal & state investment in strategies that work & save lives & costs

Day 3: A patient said to me "it's not the pain of the first assault, it's knowing that there will be others." Gender-based violence plagues the trans community. We must address stigma, fight bullying & demonstrate at all levels that

Day 4: My patient who is homeless & unwell is too sick for the streets/shelters & “too well” for the hospital.
#HousingIsHealthcare. Programs like@BHCHP provide the respite people need to heal. We need more $ & beds to expand the care and safety that should be guaranteed to all.Näytä tämä ketju -
Day 5: Unable to get transportation into Boston, a patient spent months w/worsening vision leading to blindness. W/o a car & w/o a job, had no way to travel the 30 miles.
#TransportationIsHealthcare. Investing in public transportation will improve access CC:@wutrain#mapoliNäytä tämä ketju -
Day 6: Women are half the population, more than half our patients in the hospital, and are still WAY underrepresented in clinical studies. This limits our ability to provide excellent

Day 7: Life expectancy for those w/HIV is nearly the same as the general population IF people can access care. Still I care for tragic complications that are a direct failure of getting people connected w/care because of race, ethnicity, gender or gender identity.

Day 8: This week I've cared for 5 people hospitalized because of complications of diabetes. 5 people who are paying >$1000/yr for a life saving med. Soaring prices are driving more sickness. Greedy Pharma is putting health out of reach.

Day 9: My patient stopped using heroin after watching 2 ODs. Now he struggles to get to a methadone clinic each day & is fearful he'll relapse and die. Expansion of harm reduction & low barrier access to treatment save lives. Stigma & fear are deadly.

Day 10: A year ago a patient suffered trauma from a knife & still struggles every day - wounds, rehab, depression. We don't talk nearly enough about the medical & mental health challenges that survivors of gun & knife injuries face.

Day 11: People w/disabilities are more likely to be unemployed, victims of violent crimes, & have limitations in healthcare access. Being disabled should not mean being unhealthy. We must include people w/disabilities as we expand

Day 12: All of the patients I've seen on service have 1 thing in common - access to insurance because of where they live. Your zip code should not determine your life expectancy. It is time to recognize the fundamental truth:
#healthcare is a human right. https://twitter.com/Rick_Pescatore/status/1213155962242113537?s=20 …Tämä twiitti ei ole saatavilla.Näytä tämä ketju -
Day 13: Wounds don't heal w/o nutrition.
#FoodIsMedicine. Almost 50 million Americans are food insecure, leading to more chronic illness, worse outcomes, and increased cost. We must increase access to healthy food & protect/expand SNAP benefits. cc:@DeniseGarlick@JulianCyrNäytä tämä ketju -
Day 14: Through tears a patient said "it's not supposed to be this hard. I can barely live on the money I make, my parents can't support me & I don't feel welcome. I have faith in you but not the system." It's NOT supposed to be this hard. The system is broken. Now, let's fix it.
