The thing that's genuinely very sad is that this is an excellent array of winners and they've been buried inside a deeply misjudged, intensely overproduced 3.5 trudge that looks for all the world like an extended ego trip.

In another context, GRRM's stories of his up-and-down relationship with the Hugo's (especially as a struggling young writer) would have been just fine, along with what he had to say about Campbell, Asimov and Heinlein. 2/x

But GRRM hasn't been a struggling young writer for longer than many of his readers have been alive, and he's achieved a level of success that Campbell and Asimov and Heinlein could only dream of. Among baby-boom sf writers, maybe only Stephen King outdoes him on that level. 3/x

Even if GRRM’s intentions were good- the resulting words and tone were dismissive and anything but forward-facing. I’m tired of old white men being given a pass on disrespect, racist and sexist words and behaviors because “they meant well”. He’s a writer. He knows how words work.

Understood, and I would not give GRRM a pass on this - IMHO, not only has he pretty much disqualified himself from participating in future Hugo’s ceremonies, his performance last night will be regarded as a textbook example of how NOT to do this sort of thing.
