1 thing I learned from Iowa that applies around the country - scale-sensitive regulation. Small family-owned farms should have much more freedom and flexibility in their practices than big corporate farms.

Natural selection builds mechanisms that human engineers still struggle to match. Exhibit A: The neural structures underpinning head stabilization in this hawk. (Head stabilization has the same function as image stabilization in cameras: to maintain a steady view despite motion.)

When I talk with my students about dating in the age of apps, I worry that there now little courtship, little frustration, and therefore little chance for romantic love to develop...

The path of a maturing thinker. In order to get to Grown-Up Mountain and start real learning, you have to brave the cold winds of Insecure Canyon. If you're not willing to say "I don't know" for a while, you might spend your whole life on Child’s Hill.

Oh wow! The last common ancestor of ants and temites was 300+ million years ago - is this convergent evolution of guarding?

No president should have the absolute authority to launch nuclear weapons. Why isn’t this a major issue on the legislative agenda? Others pale in comparison.

Computer chips, for instance, are small, light weight, and difficult to produce without a continent sized civilization. One of the things the Martians will likely need to be trading with Earth for for a long time.

So what would they trade for from Earth? Hopefully they've already developed the ability to produce food, water, basic shelter and other necessities, but there will be goods with long supply chains and complex manufacturing processes that are difficult to produce on Mars.(con't)

    2. Contract with NASA/ESA to launch missions from Mars to Jupiter's moons. The low-g on Mars offers cheaper launch costs and the delta v to Jupiter and the rest of the outer solar system is lower than from Earth. 3. Hotels for rich Earthling tourists. 4. (con't)

Interplanetary Trade: Imagine there's a colony on Mars. They want certain goods from the Earth, but can't just rely on charity forever. What should they do? Some ideas: 1. Build a giant telescope. Sell telescope time to research institutions on earth. 2. (con't in reply)
