I trust you Rob but this is a high bar. White people need to be extraordinarily careful with that word in particular. The context has to be extremely powerful. I used it in a piece about Richard Pryor when he died. They were the names of his albums and I named them.

I don't have a similar experience to draw on, but it certainly strikes me that the intent and good faith (or not) of the speaker matters. Otherwise it comes across as vindictive and malicious.

I don’t agree. Never for white people or anyone not Black.

How black do you have to be? My mother was white, father was black, so I'm half. Is it ok for me? What about my kids? They have a white father and a half/half mother, so they're 25% (and have blond hair!). Is it okay for them? If they have kids who are only 1/8th is that ok?
