It is idiotic that @BretStephensNYT is catching flak for this, as if he's endorsing "us/them" politics by identifying it in the Dem debates. He's right, even if you don't want to hear it. | A Wretched Start for Democratshttps://nyti.ms/2FGr9ne

Also, the debate was on Telemundo, hence the outreach. This isn't complicated.

Every time I head to a Youngstown diner to interview Trumpers I find brett Stephens there finishing a side of hashbrowns.

It’s disingenuous to tell Democrats that they don’t deserve candidates who speak directly to their political ideals while at the same time the opposing party is literally making “pwn the libs” its organizing principle. It’s a continuing double standard.
-
That the more inclusive party is being attacked for offending its opponents, while its opponents are literally questioning the humanity of their fellow Americans.

I knew that if I dared criticize any of the Democratic candidates besides the few old white guys, the accusations of racism and sexism would come. I just didn't expect it so soon, over something that was so obviously a cynical move by one of the Dems against their own.
-
If you will note, most of the other candidates have jumped to Harris's defense against the new birtherism aimed at her. Whatever this is, it's not a circular firing squad. Politics, however, will occasionally break out during a political campaign.

As I said in my earlier tweet, this was a bad turn of phrase. But if you look at the context, it's pretty clear he is summing up what he understands to be the view of many "ordinary Americans."
-
But why isn't that as elitist as the senators opting to go with the Spanish? He's making his own assumptions about "ordinary Americans" -- which may or may not be true.
