Actually, Maher's own free-thinking got him cancelled on ABC -- back in 2001 after 9/11. And the history of black people being compared to apes/gorillas/chimpanzees is long and ugly. (Read a comments section about Serena Williams and see how quickly the ape comparisons start).

Right. Don’t like Maher, but his & Roseanne’s words are NOT equivalent. She was being racist calling a black woman an ape. Maher’s calling Trump an ape may be tasteless but has nothing to do with race. ABC was right to cancel her show. No case for cancellation of Maher’s.

Most Serena Williams comments are full of praise and admiration so im not sure what youre reading. Selective comment outrage perhaps used to generalize seems more like it .
