By failing to counter Trump over Saudi's killing of Jamal Khashoggi and the war in Yemen via the NDAA, Congress signaled that dictators are free to kill journalists and civilians in war, so long as they're Trump's "friends." My take in

Excellent thread on the questionable group of countries comprising the Pompeo-led "International Religious Freedom Alliance," and on whether his State Department is pulling punches in the annual Human Rights Reports on some favored countries (spoiler alert: it is).

Who doesn't think that Trump would now call Xi Jinping to extort him on the trade war in exchange for intelligence on, say, Pete Buttigieg? It's as simple as "Do us a favor though." Now a concern on every. single. international. issue. via

I let my kids watch (via FaceTime) the first few minutes of Elizabeth Warren's rally in Ames, and apparently my daughter (age 5) turned to my wife after I hung up and said, very seriously, "Can I run for president? Will Daddy vote for me?"

For the next century, we will be engaged in an ideological struggle between democracy and autocracy, especially with China, but also Russia and others. Our normative highground regarding democracy and the rule of law is taking a hit today.

From Afghanistan & Angola to Cambodia & Colombia, anti-personnel landmines have devasted soldiers & civilians alike. For nearly 3 decades the US has limited their use, production & export — and for the past decade, used them only on the Korean Peninsula.

When we were fighting Ebola in 2014, well over half the people leading that effort were women. People like , Lisa Monaco, Amy Pope, etc etc. Excluding half the talent pool from this task force makes us less safe.

The Trump admin is loosening restrictions on land mines, reversing an Obama admin policy. As we await details, here is some background to the story>>

Yesterday, my colleague at ⁦⁩ ⁦⁩ joined “All Things Considered” to discuss the Trump Administration’s problematic plan to loosen the Obama-Era policy on the use of land Mines: ⁦

On top of this excellent thread I would also note the important role that allies SHOULD play in this discussion, given there significant concerns about joint operations with a force using a capability they are treaty-bound to avoid.

So in sum, the Obama policy both reduced harm to farmers and kids at risk of getting their legs blown off, and supported DoD in transitioning to better weapons. Any change in policy risks negatively impacting both those worthy goals. END.

Instead of “dumb” mines, DoD wants “smart” mines that can be networked and turned on and off. Critically, these mines put a “person in the loop,” so that he or she can decide whether they go off or not. And those weapons are permissible under the relevant treaty. 7/

There’s a reason that during two decades of constant warfare they’ve essentially never been used. They don’t have much military utility. 6/

Otherwise, though, DoD acknowledged that these weapons serve no good purpose on modern battlefields. In fact, DoD-commissioned studies have shown that during the Gulf War they mainly served to limit U.S. ground forces’ maneuver capability. 5/

In the end, DoD insisted that it couldn’t do without so-called “dumb” landmines in Korea—the kind that last forever if they stay in the ground after hostilities end—given the specific circumstances there. That was a debatable but defensible position. 4/
