I’m full blooded Chinese and I didn’t know this was call a cheongsam. I only know it’s Chinese name. LOL. Who got mad at this girl for wearing it? I think it looks good! By that logic, no Chinese girl should wear a “typical” western dress or western anything!

Cheongsam is its (Cantonese) Chinese name. Qipao is the mandarin name.
-
My native tongue is Mandarin as I am from Taiwan. I also speak Cantonese but I don’t know all the terms. I’ve always thought they called it 旗袍 (qipao) as well in Cantonese. You learn something new everyday :) thanks Roaming!

So this is how multiculturalism works. Everything that is yours is theirs for the taking. Everything that theirs remains theirs and is you use it’s theft or appropriation.
-
Naught to do with multiculturalism and everything to do with leftist identity politics. Trust me when I say people in Asia love it when other people embrace their culture.
-
Spreading your culture is how you win at Civ. It's good when a culture is popular. It's influence. The endgame of their weird Footloose position is a world where Asians can't listen to hiphop, Marvel has no Thor, no one gets tacos and you can't learn a foreign language.
-
I love that a civ comment got included in this discussion. God bless that game. Also AGREED.
-
It also got quoted on someone's tweet quote compilation channel. https://twitter.com/EricHamell/status/990994337990262784?s=19 … Truly an honor. The people love Civ

I remember when I was in high school, my friend gave me a shirt just like that and a bunch of Chinese wall decorations. Everyone, including Chinese kids at school, loved my shirt. Why is everyone making such a big deal out of this now?
-
Exactly. At my school Celiedh the one Korean guy in school came dressed in full highland garb. Everyone loved it and nobody told him he wasn’t permitted to wear that because he wasn’t Scottish. I wish it was still 2007 :(

It's a melting pot. She's melting, and she looks good. Is she not allowed to like any Chinese culture? Because Chinese food is delicious, Ang Lee's Eat Drink Man Woman was a beautiful movie and Romance of Three Kingdoms is a timeless classic.
-
right but you see, if she genuinely learned and new the history behind the dress and actively learned about chinese culture then great! but saying “it’s just a dress get over it” is demeaning to the qipao’s significance and also shows she’s wearing it only for the aesthetic
-
This is a high school student at her prom. She thought "out of all the dresses for my special night, this is the most beautiful." An honor, really, but instead of nurturing her interest, adults raked her over the coals and berated her. Sad, to see a child disillusioned like that
