How is it the United States is allowing itself to fall behind on innovation?

Because we don't subsidize the right fields or projects and the Works Progress Administration, which built a good portion of the roads and bridges we see today, was defunded during WWII due to lack of workers bc of the war. Refund the latter indefinitely and problem solved.

In the 1930s the New York Central's 20th Century limited traveled from NY to Chicago in 16 hours. Modern day Amtrak time of the same trip is roughly 21 hours. A 1930s steam train ran faster routes than we have now. That's just sad.
