⁦@asymmetricinfo⁩ argues that “Obama didn’t go enough to reduce the deficit.” Every serious economist believes the problem was he didn’t get a big enough stimulus from Congress! PAYGO is a bad frame precisely b/c it perpetuates austerity economics.https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/01/04/ocasio-cortez-was-just-trying-get-into-spirit-congressional-deficit-irresponsibility/ …

This is not a technical issue. Austerity politics in Congress led to a slower recovery which paved the way for Donald Trump. And in Europe austerity politics paved the way for the rise of right wing nationalism. Progressives must unequivocally reject it!

Dig further and realize that much of that destabilizing European immigration was driven by a US policy of war in Syria (and in the vein, by destabilizing actions by the US in Guatemala and Honduras...).

Destabilizing Libya a bigger factor in migration to Europe. An even bigger factor was Merkel welcoming them. US proxy wars in Central America in the ‘80s have about zero to do with today’s migration.

Uh ok, I think the US gave a push to Libya - though that situation was likely harder to prevent. The effects of war are long, and I think they do still factor into emigration today.https://www.thenation.com/article/border-patrol-refugees-guatemala-cia-war-crimes/ …

People want to come to the US and Europe from poor countries because their countries are poor and ours are rich. They come because elements here and in Europe welcome them. The problem is that poor and violent countries are the way they are because of their people.

The US is formed by the work of many similar immigrants who risked all and had the drive and determination to make a perilous journey for better opportunities. We've done very well in the US by welcoming those people and benefiting from they and their children's contributions.

The United States wasn’t formed by illiterate migrants who speak pre-Columbian languages like Mam. People aren’t fungible - Honduras is Honduras because it’s populated by Hondurans. Replace them with an equal number of Germans or Japanese and it would be a rich country.

We do need money of the #rich 💰 because they will use it nefariously . Rich parasites use it for bribery. They are too stupid to do anything but. So why have this problem, take it away.

Mostly agree. But, like @organicfanatic5, I'd say the better way to frame it is we need the rich to not be so rich (for the reasons you gave and more). The federal government doesn't need their money. We need them to not have that money.
