They *are* entitlements. We worked for them, paid into the programs. Accordingly, we are entitled to the promised benefits. They aren't a gift or hand-out. The Rs are changing the meaning of the word "entitlement". THAT'S what needs to be combatted.

They need to stop using the word. Meanwhile,
#GOPVotingBlue is trending.

If by “entitlement” you mean I’m entitled to MY money that I’ve paid in my entire working life than YOU’RE DAMN RIGHT IM ENTITLED TO IT!!!

Thank you. Dems need to do a far better job of communicating what the deal is & stop Rs from using the media to frame policy debates.https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/8/12/1119304/-They-re-earned-benefits-not-entitlements …

They are entitlements. We need to remove the stigma of that word. We are entitled to them because we’ve paid into them our working entire lives.

I could not agree more. Working predominantly with seniors over the years, we owe them this for building our country and communities!

I'd like to know what's wrong with the word entitlements? Are disabled peoples entitled to health care and enough financial support to live dignified lives? Of course they are. We've got to stop running from that word
-
There is nothing wrong with the term, because it is a budgetary term. It refers to mandatory spending programs. That is, if you qualify for the benefit, you are entitled to it.
-
That's how the word SHOULD be used but that's not how the GOP uses it. They use it to paint a picture of an unsustainable welfare state giving out free money.

Medicare and Social Security are earned benefits. You wouldn't let the GOP take your paycheck. Don't let them take your earned benefits either.

Most working Americans have been paying into this. We all deserve our money back. It's not as if we had a choice about whether to opt in or not.

this still accepts their framing that “entitlements” and redistributive programs are less just, and leaves things like medicaid open to attack. you should be owning entitlements as something good.

I agree with you 100%, but you know you're gonna get the usual ("I'm still gonna insist we call it an entitlement coz that's what it is") push back on this right?

Agreed. Shamefully there are now seniors who are either not eating properly (some resorting to cat/dog food!) or not taking medications because they cannot afford it.
