While this is a problem, you should use some updated data and be careful with the terminology. New data from prisoners released in 2012 suggests recidivism is going down (from 48% to 37% in the three year window), and these numbers are based on those who returned to prison.

So if somebody broke into your house and god forbid pistol whipped your mom and dad your concern would be not having them punished but wether they can get a ged while locked up. I don’t know. Seems kind of weak

This should be a nuanced discussion. If the crime was non lethal, stealing, drugs etc then I agree. If it’s murder or other gruesome crimes, we cannot just put the “there’s no free will” hat on & treat them like teenagers. For the latter, it’s fair to exact a price for the loss.
