One reason for low voter turnout is that people are busy working and going to school on the pivotal day when Americans vote and decide the future. The time has come: We need to make Election Day a national holiday.https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/want-americans-to-vote-give-them-the-day-off/2018/10/10/5bde4b1a-ccae-11e8-920f-dd52e1ae4570_story.html?utm_term=.ec3b778aec7a …

That can't be the whole reason. Texas has more than 2 weeks of early voting, daily including weekends, but still has some of the lowest voter turnout in the country.

It's not the whole reason, nor should it be seen as the only solution, but an election holiday would increase turnout, as would early voting everywhere, and voting-at-home, and automatic voter registration, and more. All of these democracy-expanding improvements would be great.

I know many people who forget that it's election day unless it's a presidential election. A holiday would definitely remind them.

On the flipside: do we really want voters who are so uninformed? By no means do I suggest that they be blocked or have to pass a test on current affairs, but how informed will such a voter be?

Not necessarily uninformed voters, just busy people who have other matters to attend to. We all get caught up in it, I've missed a few midterms by being busy.

Passing the Universal Right to Vote By Mail Act would be a good move, too.

Better to ensure automatic voter registration, vote-by-mail, & same-day registration. A holiday doesn't address the financial impact of lost work for those without benefits, or the fact that retail, service industry, and many others don't get federal holidays off at all.

What about people who depend on public transportation to get to the polls? Wouldn't automatic registration and vote by mail make more sense? Paper trail, no lines or intimidation at the polls And I'm not convinced that people would use the day to vote, when the beach is call

That's how it works here: no registration needed (what does it even mean?), and voting by mail is possible. I don't see any reason why this cannot be done in USA and UK.

In some states u fill out a form and be accepted to vote. In some states, like Ca, where I live, u r registered (unless u ask not 2 be) when u get a drivers license. In some states u have 2 physically go vote unless u vote absentee (by mail).

This only helps the people who can afford to take the day off! Those whose voices most need to be lifted cannot do so. With all the amazing minds in this country, we have to be able to come up with an inclusive method where everyone can vote painlessly.

If it is a fed holiday, people will still work. Many low income people, who are already disenfranchised from voting, will still have to go to work at retail and service jobs. A better solution is to make a 1 - 2 week voting period, or better vote by mail options, like WA state.

Not sure why election day is one day, in Nevada we can start voting on the 20th and go to any polling place in the county. Why restrict the opportunity to vote.

After 25 years yall are finally starting to listen. The next phase of reform will be to sync poll times across country on national elections. This way news mediums dont influence polls that are open later on west coast
