In light of the ICPP report, we should incentivize oil companies to help with geoengineering to extend the ice of the Arctic and research on cloud seeding instead of investing in new fossil fuel infrastructure.

We didn’t incentivize car makers to produce jeeps in order to fight WWII. The government said: We are going to war and then did stuff to insure we produced jeeps and everything else we needed to win the war.

Yes,
@katiecannon2! This exactly. You are., after all a US senator who can enact laws as such. How long would you wait until they decide to do the right thing?

"Any geoengineering of the Earth’s reflectivity—such as seeding the stratosphere w crushed limestone, or spraying saltwater in the air—is not a one-time, one-off event, but something which would have to be repeated in perpetuity ie forever"-

1. Re Geoengineering, need to talk principles. See; http://getenergysmartnow.com/2008/02/28/geoengineering-basic-principles-some-thoughts-some-questions/ … 2. Re Big Oil, putting 'aside' for moment long-term obligations, should focus tech calls on where they 'can' deliver w/their expertise/skill sets. 1/n
-
Re [2], legitimate arenas might include: - Synthetic (very low/no carbon) gas, liquid fuel - Synthetic (very low/no carbon) 'petro'-chemical feedstocks - Carbon sequestration - Efficiency in fossil fuel production - (Near)Elimination of methane leakage in production 2/n
-
Re [2] continued - Plastics recycling into feedstocks - Biofuel production non-competitive w/feed production - Offshore renewable (wind, ocean) energy production (leveraging offshore oil production technology, engineering, support, etc experience/expertise) - etc ... 3/n
-
Going back to tweet: - Honestly, to extent such geoengineering merits RDT&E (research, development, test, and evaluation), don't see why
#BigOil is right place to start/'incentivize'. - Right 'incentivize': carbon pricing & regulation to foster rapid move to clean tech. 4/n
