This was a super fun conversation! What an amazing group of creative postdocs across so many areas of science, with fantastic questions about the best ways to manage their careers and work effectively across disciplines.

Fellows heard from Director of @KIPAC1 @RisaWechsler and Professor Rosamond Naylor @Stanforddoerr about the importance of communication when managing large interdisciplinary teams and how to facilitate collaboration across those teams.

Beautiful work by and the DELVE team. Was proud to play a small part cheering from the sidelines, always so happy to find new Milky Way satellites!!
Quote Tweet
Tonight, I'm excited to share the latest results from the DELVE survey: we found six more ultra-faint Milky Way satellites at D < 105 kpc! Introducing: DELVE 3, DELVE 4, Virgo II, DELVE 5, Bootes V, and Leo Minor I! Check out our preprint here: arxiv.org/abs/2209.12422

An oval-shaped skymap showing the positions of the newly-discovered Milky Way satellites (depicted as red dots). 6 square inset panels show the smoothed stellar density distributions for a small region around each satellite. In each of these panels, the satellite is visible as a small, dark-colored smudge against a grey background.

This is a truly incredible image. For non-experts, there are galaxies in this image that are likely more than 13 billion light yrs away, and some of them have mind-blowing detail. Will teach us tons about the early universe, galaxy formation, and dark matter. Can’t wait for more!

"In order to solve a problem, you first have to see it, name it, contend with its truth." What we are facing is big and will not go away quickly. But coming to terms with what it is, and with the scope of everything it will take to defeat it, is a first and essential step.

Local and state elections matter.
Quote Tweet
I've been asked what specific local & state elections matter a lot in the wake of Dobbs, & what concretely they'd affect. With the caveats that the next steps need to involve mobilization, solidarity, & protests that aren't electorally focused, here are some thoughts. ↓

Safety has been an issue for marginalized groups making academic job decisions for a long time. The reach of this effect has broadened significantly this week and may broaden much further. We all must think more deeply about how we can support all members of community better.

Please answer this poll if you're in academia, and not a cis het white man. Have you ever "opted" out of job/school opportunities related to your identity/safety?
