    I meant to tweet this earlier, but OwnVoices started as a hashtag to uplift marginalized voices telling their specific stories from their backgrounds. It's not meant to cudgel people into revealing their private lives to you, or demanding explanations. It was to empower.

    I came out because I was finally *happy* and comfortable with being who I am. My agent never told me I had to. Don't let anyone else decide when that should be for you, even if you decide never to tell anyone else. *Especially*, if you choose never to tell anyone else.

    If anyone tells you that you *have* to out yourself just to sell your work, then they are not looking out for your best interests. They are first and foremost looking for the commission rates they can take from your book.

    This is a prime example of , which was originally intended for people to share and acknowledge their own experiences, instead being monetized by the publishing industry as another cynical marketing ploy rather than for honest discourse. I fucking hate it.

    Do note that this is the same agent who ignored people telling him two of their clients were trash until shit went public, to the point where he looked away while one of THOSE clients bullied ANOTHER of *HIS* own clients

    Everything I’m saying might seem like a nightmare to you. And it can be. I’ve seen it from the inside. The joy of it and the hate that can come with it. I’ve seen the death threats, the slurs, the violence. I’ve been subject to it in small ways. The way the space that was your home can turn in an instant to a trap. The way a community becomes a demand. And so I hear all the time from people who want to refuse, to opt out. And it is possible, but not if you want to be commercially published. Not if what you crave is sales, recognition, awards, and an income. That’s the cost. That’s the price of entry. Even if you stay off the internet. Even if you do no events. Your own refusal will become your brand. Your own lack of engagement will be the story. So if you’re gonna do it, you might as well do it on purpose.

    This publishing professional says you have to tell people your marginalization on purpose if you want to have books sales, awards, etc., and no. No no no no no. You don't get to decide for authors what they're allowed to reveal about themselves in their works to profit *you*.

    international literary agencies.... please do not do this do not cold email writers at least do the research to know that I am not self-published and that I already have an agent?? writers, agencies who do this likely do not have experience or the sales to rep you well, yikes

    got a random email from australian lit agency asking if I want rep, without checking to see that I am not self-pubbed (which they mention that I am for some reason): “Hello Rin, Moonbeam Bookworms Agency (www.moonbeambookwormsagency.com) is based in Sydney Australia. The agency is looking for clients to represent to publishers. I noted that you appear to be self-published. If you are looking for representation, to work with an agent please send through your interest.”

    I don’t have much to add about the querying topic being discussed today - I was lucky that my agent offered me rep on the strength of the 1st manuscript I sent her but the agents who wouldn’t rep me unless I made my main character white are no longer agents, and I’m still here.
