    some personal news: after 9 years as Brussels reporter for I will move to its Prague HQ to become Europe editor as of 2 March. I will still follow EU/NATO events & of course , and all other countries I happily call "my own"

    tonight the EU ambassadors agreed to sanction RT & Sputnik and impose SWIFT sanctions on 7 Russian banks. there is also political agreement on an economic sanctions package on but final adoption expected tomorrow morning.

    the European Parliament overwhelmingly passed (637 for, 13 against, 26 abstentions) a non-binding resolution asking EU institutions "to work towards granting EU candidate status to ". no unanimity among 27 EU member states for this at the moment.

    the European Parliament will tomorrow pass a non-binding resolution asking EU institutions "to work towards granting EU candidate status to ". Worth noting that you need unanimity of all 27 EU member states for this and that unanimity doesn't exist right now.
