Do you study the deep ocean? Will you be at the Ocean Sciences meeting in San Diego . If so, please join us for a Town Hall to discuss the future of research on Monday afternoon pls join us **PLS RT**

I should add that all credit goes to Andy Billings with the Jason team for designing and building this!

Hey there, deep sea scientists! Want to sample fluid using an ROV/HOV? The UFO (Universal Fluid Obtainer) successfully went down on its maiden voyage last night! It's a community resource available through NDSF; you can attach bags/filters as needed. Ask me or w/ Qs!

ANOTHER earthquake last night! Hit around midnight. Jason was in the water, and rumor has it the shrimp had a mild freakout and then we felt it on the ship a few seconds later. Photo shows shrimp post-freakout, so you'll just have to imagine it.

Earthquake update #2: so much stuff in the water! Transmissivity (green line) shows how clear the water is, and you can see all the stuff in the water near the seafloor. Jason pic shows a few particles too. It's like an earthquake-induced deep sea blizzard!

Post-earthquake update! Some chimneys have definitely toppled over (the one venting black smoke in the left image lost its top) and there's a ton of crap in the water, making it really hard to navigate. The shrimp have sent out triage teams and have commenced rebuilding efforts.

So.... the latest scuttlebutt is that we just felt an earthquake. The whole ship was rumbling for a good minute. Earthquake off the coast of Cuba, apparently. Who knew you could feel an earthquake at sea?!

ROV Jason has been hanging with the denizens of the deep all day. The denizens at the top of the ocean are in slightly more pleasant conditions.

CHECK. OUT. THESE. VENTS! ROV Jason has arrived at Piccard, home to the deepest and (in my humble opinion) gnarliest vents in the world. These guys were venting at 396˚C when we were sampling!

Since I'm sitting in the lab by myself filtering away in the wee hour of the morning, today's post features people at work on the ! Images of crew, Jason ops, and scientists doing their thing on the cruise.

Had a few issues with Jason that had to get ironed out today, but that meant we got to watch Jason deployments during the day AND at night! ROV is in the water for real this time, we think. Next up: more vents!

Apparently yesterday was day (that's a thing now?) but I ran out of internet before I could post, so here's a late photo of Susan and Malaika sampling water from a Niskin after yesterday's CTD cast.

P.S. I'm also posting some photos on my lab's new Instagram page @spacehogs_lab, but I don't really know how to use Instagram yet because I am apparently an Old and I don't know how to Internet.

Quiet science day today with Jason ops suspended due to weather. So here's a shot from two days ago: the Jason guys swabbing the deck after the first Jason deployment. Gotta keep a clean ship!

WE HAVE VENTS!! A shot from inside the Jason van, looking at vents from Von Damm at the Mid-Cayman Rise. I've been studying this site since my postdoc in 's lab back in 2015, and it is SO EXCITING to finally see them live!! (Thx Julie for the opportunity!)

Yesterday's science: CTD cast --> filter 120L of water to remove microbes --> add iron to flocculate viruses --> filter 120L again to get ironclad viruses onto filter --> go to bed after 15 hours of filtering. Orange is the color of success!

After a long transit, Jason is finally in the water! Calm seas, happy scientists, and a rainbow to mark the occasion.

And returned to the microbio lab, where my shoes are drying, Neptune's Laboratory is back safe and sound, and we are ready to get the science started! (Hopefully tomorrow!)

We then ventured out to the 03 deck to breathe in the salty Caribbean air...

All that excitement was exhausting, so we headed to the bunk for a quick nap. (And a change into dry clothes.)
