The one shocking thing this film is missing to make it really track is that Harvey Keitel’s pimp isn’t black. I feel that would really add to the authenticity of the type of white male fears and anxieties the movie documents

This is true. Also I think even though he’s white Keitel is implicitly coded as black, like what Mailer called “The White Negro” https://twitter.com/colddayonmars/status/991742657469779970?s=21 …

Oh wow that explains a lot. It didn’t ring true that as an angry white man’s wet dream/nightmare they didn’t make that character blackhttps://twitter.com/brianblevinson/status/991741929711915008?s=21 …

Yes, the “black” alpha Keitel cucks him by corrupting the young girl, the type who represents purity to this type of lunatic the way Taylor Swift does to the alt right, and is cucked by the Jewish beta with the progressive career woman https://twitter.com/colddayonmars/status/991743656993460224?s=21 …

Honestly I think to a degree Scorcese has a lot of sympathy for these types of guys’ psychosexual anxieties despite not being as far gone as they are. He loved gratuitous n-word use not to. He inserts himself into the movie just to gratuitously n-bombhttps://twitter.com/jessek/status/991739354606321664?s=21 …

I don’t think the people who lionize Bickle are missing the creators’ point as much as intellectuals like to believe. Same with the “Bad Walt” fans of Breaking Bad. I think they tap into and amplify a genuine sympathetic strain in the creators

Oh wow this article explains a lot! I think it also shows the folly of trying to do economic anxiety vs racial arguments. Schrader had economic and status anxiety but his response was to become more racist and sexist https://twitter.com/brianblevinson/status/991740085883359232?s=21 …

When his economic and status situation improved and stabilized he sees the folly of the screenplay’s racism. So is that original screenplay a product of economic anxiety or racism!

Yes, when and where a director who doesn’t normally act inserts himself into his movies to act to me is especially telling. Tarantino with “dead nigger storage” in pulp fiction is great example https://twitter.com/chukaejeckam/status/991747128908288000?s=21 …

The Driver in Drive is very much a better adjusted less toxic relatively more benign Travis Bickle. Dysfunctional and alienated but with a great sense of personal mastery and potential for human connection. The movies are very similar.

Have you seen Observe and Report?
-
No. Is it good?
-
it's by far the best taxi driver riff
-
I wouldn't call it "good" but I would say it tried really hard and earnestly to get into the main character's head.
-
you're right it's not good, it's great
-
ehh, it's decent. Had it's moment but not perfect.

Haven't watched the video yet but what strikes me about Bickle is, he's an extremely common kind of creep but I feel like people don't recognize the continuity between him & today's creeps due to the absence of the internet in his world
