You are announcing that your classroom is welcome to those like you, those who are perceived as "normal." Of course, I know you are not cold-hearted. Most of you will make "reasonable accommodations" for students all the while making it clear that they are not truly welcome.

I understand, I really do. Teaching is hard. Learning is hard. Life is hard. But, banning devices only advantages certain students while significantly disadvantaging many others, particularly in ways you may not understand.

Undoubtedly, your screen bans will yield positive results, because those who represent negative results are excluded or might feel unable to speak up. For those students, I say to my fellow professors, stop.

Any pedagogy that excludes disability or parents or care-givers or others who do not fit the mold of the 18-22 year-old student with no job or financial concerns or family responsibility is no pedagogy at all. It is a defensive action that abdicates real responsibility.

I think instituting a flat ban is both misguided and unrealistic. But I think it's perfectly fine to ask students to keep their phones away during class unless it's necessary for them to keep handy, and to tell them that other devices should only be used for note-taking purposes.

I think it's better to talk to him about responsible use and let them choose. Why create a situation where some have to out themselves through accommodation or exception?

I agree with this for the most part, there are some circumstances where device use is limited for reasons outside of the typical "distraction" argument. In figure drawing classes it's fine for music but to have it in hand while the model is disrobed can make them uncomfortable
