For years I heard it repeated that Darren Aronofsky had bought the live action rights to Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue. That's why he was able to plunder shots from it for his most famous films. Today I learned that never happened and he's always just said it was "homage." WTF!??https://twitter.com/Richmond_Lee/status/838422942555877376 …

Aronofsky at least bought the rights to Perfect Blue before plundering #SatoshiKon's work for ideas https://cinemagi.wordpress.com/2011/01/13/kon-artist-or-why-darren-aronofsky-owes-anime-an-apology/ … @E_Megas pic.twitter.com/gv334IcWz4

Apparently Kon was under the impression that Aronofsky had bought the rights to adopt his film into live action, but the negotiations never went through fully!https://twitter.com/cursed_springs/status/1378353707675394048?s=19 …

Ah, seems like I've read it wrong. Kon was under the impression that Aronofsky had acquired the live action rights, but it turns out he never did - the negotiations fell apart due to a clause in the contract that required Aronofsky to head the project himself. this part: pic.twitter.com/i29HXFoESp

This is painful to find out because Kon was such an incredible storyteller who never had the international commercial success of Aronofsky, who took many of his most iconic shots directly from Kon's film, Perfect Blue! I thought "well at least he paid for it" but NOPE!pic.twitter.com/1oDZkq4qUI

Ultimately I think history will cherish Kon's films above Aronofsky though. I take a lot of comfort from this. RIP Satoshi Kon!https://youtu.be/oz49vQwSoTE

I actually LIKE Aronofsky's films too! I would be fine with all this if he was just more honest with how much he took from Kon. Influence is fine! DENYING your most direct influences is erasure and appropriation tho! This is also a reminder to be wary of English language reporting on anime/manga/games/Japanese pop culture. How long has this misinformation continued to be reported as fact? And how long has the actual real info been available on Kon's blog in his own words?

But Kon's blog is in Japanese. While the internet runs on English. So bogus information in English will persist while the simple truth, with a reputable source reminds buried in plain sight!

I just want to clarify: I don't mean ALL English language reporting on anime (& other cultures in general) is false. Just that a TON of bogus info gets passed around. For instance you know Hayao Miyazaki never actually said "anime was a mistake" right?https://twitter.com/Richmond_Lee/status/1231178892615938049?s=19 …

Public Service Announcement: all those quotes you see about Miyazaki saying how "anime was a mistake" and he hates otaku? They're all fake. They were made with the intention of tricking people into thinking they were real. https://twitter.com/Jojoludens/status/1231069246194454529 …

Aronofsky’s been at a point for a while where he’s too much of an Important Artist to have influences though

"My biggest influences are John Singer Sargent and the Baroque masters" -Some dude that has directly copied a bunch of anime/manga/Japanese game artists for years but won't name any of them as an influence (I've seen this happen over and over!)
