In 1958, Ira A. Schulman (1908-1970) opened Champ’s at 1524 K Street NW, near the Sheraton Carlton and Statler-Hilton hotels. This is a luncheon menu from Champ’s, dated February 27, 1962. The restaurant closed that year, superseded by the Knife and Fork on M Street.

Roads in the US are not funded by the government
They are funded by the American public through a system known as the motor fuel tax
Quote Tweet
Hi @elonmusk.
The @BBC is not funded by the UK government.
It is funded by the British public through a system known as the licence fee.
The BBC's operations and editorial decision-making are entirely independent of the government
Show this thread
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The BBC is principally funded through a licence fee paid by UK households; the amount is set by the government in a periodic 'licence fee settlement'. As with any government imposed tax, it’s government mandated. UK government is currently reviewing this arrangement.

A very fond #DavesCarIDService farewell to the fastest hot rodder of all time, Craig Breedlove, who died April 4 at age 87. 1st human to surpass 400, 500, & 600 mph at Bonneville. His training wheels: this 1934 Ford 3w coupe, purchased at age 13 for $75. Godspeed to the GOAT.

If you believe every election is rigged against the good guys, actually winning an election means you must be a bad guy. (Probably a mistake to make this the Republican brand.)

It shouldn't take 4 years to approve 86 units of senior housing (especially near transit and services in a place like Tenleytown). D.C. local government can do better.
Quote Tweet
DC's sclerotic government, here the Court of Appeals, yesterday gave final approval to building Sunrise senior residences on Tenley Circle at Wisconsin Ave Baptist Church.
Plan is for 86 senior units plus a church.
First BZA hearing was 11/14/18.

exactly the kind of group project that could break the ice for a new class of alders.
what would be your fifth star?

You can't quite see it in these photos, but the skin texture on this sculpture is alarmingly naturalistic. It even has faint blue veins painted in on the extended hand. Uncanny valley law enforcement art.

Some on the enviro left that are in favor of any alternative *until* it actually becomes viable, upon which they suddenly discover problematic trade-offs that were ignored during the slogan stage. At that point, the purity spiral begins and they're against everything again.

The fact that some progressives are now opposing the transmission lines that their policy preferences would inevitably require is illustrative of how slogans and sexy messages may get certain people excited, but they don’t solve real problems.

I wonder if there will be any university presidents or administrators who will become famous, like Hayakawa did in 1968, for pushing back on violence and radicalism on U.S. campuses. There seems to be an appetite for it.

Originally a Democrat, the Canadian-born Japanese-American linguist Hayakawa eventually changed parties and ran for office as a Republican. He became a U.S. senator from California in 1977:
