2) From a random, rambling & rather lovely reader email:
"That day in 1945, I was 7 or 8 years old and I was sitting beside him on the seat of an old buckboard wagon being pulled by a mule."
(extra points for mule reference, known at NYT South as "The @applebome Rule").
