hey thanks for writing Jim. I'm a little confused by yr comment. NHC on its website doesn't affix "major" adjective to storms based on category from what i see. we meant it as a general description... https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php

Just saw your answer - thanks. Look on the chart you sent, in the left column, and "major" is in parenthesis on Cats 3-4-5. I wrote "The Ship and The Storm" about Mitch, Cat 5, in Honduras, and spent time at the NHCenter. Also went through Katrina, and wrote, "Charity.

I meant to add: folks in hurricane country take "major" seriously. Most won't evacuate until it gets at least Cat 3 (the first of the three "major" categories)
