In my fiction, space is settled by enterprising engineers, without radical new science.

  2. The UK PM's "All cars to be zero-emmisions by 2035" sounds good, but I'm sure there'll be exemptions for trucks, and any consumers will switch to driving those rather than respect the ban. Just like the fleet gas-mileage limits in the USA. HM Queen already drives Land-Rovers.

  3. Now we're leaving the EU, can I stop putting incomprehensible popup warnings about biscuits on my website?

  4. Great news that the UK government has not given in to US bullying on the issue of involvement in . We've already studied the risk, and the US "new evidence" was crap, so bye-bye.

  5. I have a notion for space debris removal. A small satellite (5kg?) manouvers close to the wreckage and fires a tether which sticks to it (magnets, hooks, chewing gum?) It then thrusts away, playing out the tether (1km?) and stops. The counterweight tidal forces speed deorbit.

On Tuesday our honorary associate Dick Taverne will introduce a bill to end the automatic right of Church of England bishops to sit in the Lords. Urge your MP to show support using our template letter:

  7. Could a future expedition to Nepture or Uranus have any chance of including an atmospheric probe, maybe capable of finding a solid surface? Do we even know how far down that is?

  10. Has anyone looked into the possibility that Russian Buk SAM units are programmed to shoot down anything Ukrainian, without reference to the operators?

  11. Just heard today that my surgery had clear margins and none of the lymph nodes showed signs of cancer. So I'm officially cancer-free!

  13. I'm on the mend! Survived operation, all according to plan. Now out of intensive care and on a general ward. Lots of tubes and drains still to come out.

  14. We don't have thanksgiving here in England - our native people didn't get a chance to sit down to dinner with us before they ran away to Wales. But I'm thankful to the NHS, for giving me a chance at surviving my cancer.

  15. Twitter is global, not local. I unfollow people who tweet about: pets needing adoption, lost children, local weather, etc. etc. et interminable cetra.

  17. Just because I'm an independent author, you don't have to buy my books in e-book form. Here's a link to the paperback of my first book, in case anyone wants one.

  18. I've designed a system of on-ramps so customers can enter the complex from the centre. There'd be a slip-coach system to get from one ring to the next. But how realistic are the timings? Everything is revolving at 1 rpm! Fun project, anyhoo.

  19. Further fleshing-out of the city of Rotrdom, on Phobos, I'm looking at the circular railways that provide artificial gravity. Simple enough, though the Earth-gravity one runs at over 600 km/hr. The conundrum is how to get on and off. I programming a sim to help understand it.

  20. Screwing up a calculation can get you almost anything withing the performance envelope of your ship's drive. I'd have thought the most likely outcome would be a solar orbit that failed to meet Mars. A long and fruitless journey to nowhere.

  21. I'm now willing to reveal: I was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in April. An operation is planned for December 2, which should leave me cancer-free, but recovery will be slow and arduous. I'm thankful for NHS and the amazing work they do.
