Ireland is a civilised country except in this 1 area: http://www.newrepublic.com/article/119147/ireland-abortion-case-reveals-draconian-horror-catholic-law … You'd think the Roman Church would have lost all influence.

@RichardDawkins 994 human beings with Down's Syndrome deliberately killed before birth in England and Wales in 2012. Is that civilised?

  3. Richard Dawkins ‏@RichardDawkins 20 Aug 2014

.@AidanMcCourt Yes, it is very civilised. These are fetuses, diagnosed before they have human feelings.

@RichardDawkins @AidanMcCourt I honestly don't know what I would do if I were pregnant with a kid with Down Syndrome. Real ethical dilemma.

@InYourFaceNYer Abort it and try again. It would be immoral to bring it into the world if you have the choice.

  6. Kerry Hood ‏@kerryhood 20 Aug 2014

@RichardDawkins @InYourFaceNYer I don't agree with that. key is that you have a choice. No one tells you that you should or shouldn't abort

  7. InYourFaceNewYorker ‏@InYourFaceNYer 20 Aug 2014

@kerryhood @RichardDawkins I don't think he was ordering me to do so should the situation come up (it won't b/c I don't plan on having kids)

@InYourFaceNYer @RichardDawkins sorry I was picking up on the suggestion it is immoral to bring a child into the world with a disability.

@kerryhood @RichardDawkins It is an interesting dilemma. What about people on the autism spectrum (which I am)? Where would u draw the line?

Richard Dawkins Verified account ‏@RichardDawkins 20 Aug 2014

@InYourFaceNYer People on that spectrum have a great deal to contribute, Maybe even an enhanced ability in some respects. DS not enhanced.

@RichardDawkins @InYourFaceNYer Who decides who gets to do the utility/suffering calculus? Very slippery slope indeed.

@argyle_argylist @RichardDawkins This is true but it's like RD has said before, we should be able to discuss taboo subjects.

@InYourFaceNYer @RichardDawkins Not arguing for censorship. I think Dawkins is wrong. Arrogant to decide whose suffering is worth living.

@linkshund @RichardDawkins still 'enhancement' compared with whatever reptilian pronouncement's actually coming next

        .@linkshund @RichardDawkins was wondering how long that'd take..the censure of civilisation, I mean http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/richard-dawkins-on-babies-with-down-syndrome-abort-it-and-try-again-it-would-be-immoral-to-bring-it-into-the-world-9681549.html …

@RichardDawkins @kykaree @InYourFaceNYer Not true Mr Dawkins, you have a very narrow minded view on "ability"

    2. ugh life ‏@whatkatie_did 20 Aug 2014

So @RichardDawkins reckons since people with Down's syndrome don't have 'enhanced abilities' they should be aborted before birth

@RichardDawkins Also it's worth asking how we should define "contribute".

@RichardDawkins @InYourFaceNYer Having, or not having, 'advanced abilities,' are not the only or most important indications of human worth.

@RichardDawkins @InYourFaceNYer You need to educate yourself not only on Downs Syndrom & ASD, but also on human worth outside 'intellect.'

    7. Quen Took ‏@gentlemandyke 21 Aug 2014

@RichardDawkins @InYourFaceNYer Also a pretty low morality when it comes to human worth. And how do you define what a person 'contributes'?

    8. La1a ‏@L_a_1_a 20 Aug 2014

@RichardDawkins @InYourFaceNYer So having advanced mathematical ability is enhanced but being extra loving is worthless?
