The most powerful hegemony is implicit and seemingly consensual. As opposed to vaguely talking about "safety," I would love to see the ruling class explicitly tell us what we can and cannot say, who's protected and who's not. It would be revealing.

The forbidding of certain words has a silver lining: a new code or lingo would arise; we'd be forced to be more creative, nuanced, and ironic with language; it would force many to clean up their acts.

Some hard truths: We don't live in a "free country" (nor a particularly sane one). We're not going to "take our country back" by voting in the latest Republican populist. We're dissidents and heretics. We're navigating dangerous waters. Speech codes would act as a map.
