To get productivity & wages growing again, we need to rebuild innovation & R&D capacity outside London & the SE. My new paper suggests how to go about this, with more focus on translational research for health & low carbon energy:

For ⁦⁩ colleagues (and anyone else that’s interested) I wrote a blog on what ‘levelling up’ means for the University and for its social responsibility agenda.

What has science policy ever done for Barnsley? Interesting to reread this in light of renewed interested in place and the North especially. (tl;dr: benefits could include translational research; jobs, especially apprenticeships; and public engagement)

"Should we fund people or projects?"- a recurring debate in science policy. My essay in today's collection argues UK ARPA should take a 3rd approach, backing the visions of programme leaders to build & fund research communities

We're getting a new funding agency modelled on the legendary US agency ARPA, it was in the Queen's Speech. So what might it look like, what would it be for, and how could we make it work? A new set of essays (including one from me) from

Really great stuff in today's speech by -- there are certainly big opportunities in many parts of the UK for the UK government to come alongside UK business so that they can boost research & development together.

Science Minister is right to be proud to have signed the 2050 net zero greenhouse gas commitment into law - he's right to say this needs R&D and new technologies as well as the speedy deployment of existing tech

Great to see Science Minister endorsing regional "levelling up" of R&D spend in context of overall doubling of public science budget - not North v South, but all parts of UK reaching their potential, driving up productivity & living standards

I’ll miss many dedicated & talented colleagues at who’ve shared these goals, but I’ll be keen to do what I can to help universities work together for the benefit of the North of England & the UK more widely.

A wrench to leave after >20 years, but my productive scientific collaborations there will continue. The Uni has a great record of supporting the cultural vibrancy & economic growth of its city, I’m proud of my contribution to that, esp in my 7 years as PVC R&I

Crucial point - if (and it is an if) there is a competition between nations in R&D it is not between R&D/GDP ratios.
