Hermes and Athena both have metis (clever intelligence) in common, but Hermes is of the night (stealthy, cunning, and deceiving) and Athena of the day (calm, reasonable, open in judgement.) via

I feel duty bound to report that this exercise was not wholly succcessful. The internet connection was lost repeatedly at the Indian end, limiting severely the contact with the audience; and the session had to be cut short. There is still room to go with electronic connectivity.

Tomorrow I'm talking to a conference in Bengaluru from London. If I'd flown there and back it would have been 7 tonnes of carbon. Zooming for 90 minutes will use 1kg of carbon (although it may be less as my electricity is from renewable sources).

Yesterday, I spent another frustrating day working in my NHS clinic whilst using software that ran slowly, crashed repeatedly or failed to work at all. The priority should be getting our basic NHS IT to systems work correctly.

I can’t help but be interested in past medical treatments that in retrospect are obviously ineffective and harmful–because we no doubt still have many such treatments. (Indeed, I’ll end this short blog by describing one.) via

Good news on the petrol/diesel ban being brought forward BUT 1) 2035 isn't soon enough and 2) why does this Govt. still seem to think only of EVs (vs. bikes, walking and public transport which offer much bigger gains) are the future of transport?!

There is something simple minded in the idea that a drug could “cure” depression when it is such a complex condition with so many interlinked antecedents. via

The retraction happened before a single news outlet with any reach covered the paper, as best we can tell. But none of it was quite fast enough for some critics.

We, like the ancient people of the Mediterranean, are one of many peoples and to survive we must colonise other planets. Perhaps like those ancient people we will trade with, intermingle with, and marry those other forms of life. via
