Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

This news is both (a) very bad, and (b) super unsurprising for anyone who has been following the FBI’s “going dark” argument. Which has never convincingly felt like it’s about encrypted phones. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/fbi-repeatedly-overstated-encryption-threat-figures-to-congress-public/2018/05/22/5b68ae90-5dce-11e8-a4a4-c070ef53f315_story.html …pic.twitter.com/wVWzE3KNTy

Keep in mind that this is not the first time in recent memory that the FBI’s testimony re: encrypted phones was misleading. There was also an OIG report about San Bernardino which contained these gems: https://oig.justice.gov/reports/2018/o1803.pdf …pic.twitter.com/lUEG4LUcko

The FBI’s timeline on encrypted phones has never even made sense to me. In September 2014 Apple deployed a major update to their iOS encryption. And one month later this had become such a big deal to the FBI that the Director launched the “Going Dark” campaign against it?pic.twitter.com/S2Tel8J0ED

I think it’s much more reasonable to assume that the FBI is concerned about access to encrypted data in motion (text messaging, calls) and the encrypted device issue kind of “fell into their lap”.

Which is why I am so concerned about researchers and policymakers who say “let’s be reasonable, what’s the harm in developing crypto backdoors for the encrypted device use case”. Because the FBI’s prosecution of this issue is not consistent with that as an endpoint.

Once you say “we should have crypto backdoors for law enforcement to access encrypted devices, because that requires physical possession” there is no principled reason why they shouldn’t have backdoors into all encrypted data.

At the end of the day, multibillion dollar firms who know their business are making decisions about how to protect user data. There seem to be three models: 1. We don’t have your data. 2. We have it, but protect it religiously. 3. We want it, and we’ve probably already lost it.

Backdoors in encryption take option (1) off the table. That leaves you with option (2) — maybe Google *so far* — and option (3), which Facebook and Equifax were nice enough to demonstrate for us.

Getting there, but think about the steps that come next after the billion dollar firms all decide to lick boots, this becomes widely known and the targets move to open platforms

We're seriously behind on building the open platforms we need. Google's "don't be evil" con robbed us of decades of head-start.
