Reflecting on how folks not so good with social awareness (perhaps on the autism spectrum, for instance) are some of the kindest, most socially considerate people I know. Blaming rude, inappropriate behavior on these traits gives good people a bad name I think.

Not knowing boundaries vs knowing & not caring. When you know you’re in the former camp, you’re more likely to ask if something’s okay & respond quickly to feedback. I really like that, and if someone gives me a head’s up that they’re not sure what’s okay I’m happy to explain.

I was hanging out with a lovely gentlemen on the autism spectrum who is new to the industry & he thought that everyone assumed he was going to treat them badly because of all the horrible tech bro behavior that gets blamed on “he’s just socially awkward.” No! Broke my heart a bit

I explained the distinction between not knowing and not caring, and it’s important we don’t spread that wrong association around. Don’t blame cruelty on social awkwardness.

Evil people who knowingly & willfully violate boundaries are very very aware of this and willfully perpetuate the misunderstanding, dumping abuse onto socially awkward people to masquerade as them.
