Firefox addon to fix (remove) a malicious API that lets YouTube prevent background playback on mobile.https://twitter.com/CopperheadOS/status/996898039011868672 …
You wouldn't have? I totally would have. The right way to do this was just forcibly suspend non-foreground tabs unless the user explicitly lets them run in background, not let sites control stuff themselves.

I view every new browser API from a standpoint of "what would a site maliciously trying to monetize its users use this API for?"
-
The strange thing with this API is they're essentially using it in the spirit of the API: saving resources in the background. Find it very strange that they would even consider trying to monetize the ability to play video in the background especially so aggressively.
-
Even if they weren't trying to monetize Red, they'd be trying to get you to switch to the YT app so they can show you ads (which get blocked in browser).
-
Their mobile strategy as a whole shifted away from the web to getting Google Mobile Services on as many devices as possible and part of that involved crippling Gmail, Maps, etc. in the browser.
-
Gmail mobile interface is ridiculously bad and looks like Windows 98. Maps doesn't support turn-by-turn navigation in the browser as a similar way of getting people to use the app but at least it's not done via tricky API abuse, etc.
-
Not sure about the actual directions quality, but OsmAnd app is waaaaay better than Maps in performance and UX.
-
http://maps.me is quite good too. Much better than OsmAnd for the basics but lacks the massive feature set. https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.github.axet.maps/ … is the fork that ended up on F-Droid. It's just missing some frills.

I’ve been using http://Maps.me as a solid replacement on my Copperhead Nexus 5X for a while now, to great satisfaction~
