Yeah, I do @musllibc, FOSS & infosec stuff. But now is not the time for a mostly-/only-tech Twitter feed.

As a @Telstra customer I want to know what is going on here. I already pay a premium for the service. I do not want my location data being sold and used by anyone. Where do we opt out? Telstra's new sales pitch: your location, hour by hourhttps://www.smh.com.au/national/telstra-s-new-sales-pitch-your-location-hour-by-hour-20180430-p4zch2.html …

Do I need to find a new provider @Telstra or are you going to address the issues here? Mobility data has enormous potential to compromise privacy and personal security. I expect mine to be kept secure, not sold off to whoever wants it.

The insights generated are aggregated and anonymous, so they don’t identify you personally or compromise your privacy. You can opt-out here if you don’t want us to use data collected from our network for the purposes of third party location insights http://m.bigpond.com/mpm/mktoptout  -Ash

There is no such thing as anonymization. The only ethical move is never to collect the data to begin with.

They're a phone company. They collect data. The issue here is what they do with it. And, yes, anonymisation is something of a magical buzzword that is invoked to make people relaxed about data being shared. I'm interested in finding out what Telstra thinks it means.

A phone company's job (and only job) is to connect calls/route packets. Collecting and monetizing data about customers is not part of their job, and should not be legal for them to do.

All phone companies collect data. If they did not they would be unable to do that core business of connecting calls and routing packets. What happens to that data is the crucial issue.

I'm distinguishing "collecting" from ephemeral use.
