Ray Ozzie's crypto backdoor scheme is technically flawed, ignores systems issues, and is generally misguided. But that doesn't remotely justify some of the personal abuse he's been getting. (Dorothy Denning, who supported key escrow in the 90's, got similarly shameful abuse).
In the context of current world political climate, this is no more "being wrong on a technical issue" than IBM was "wrong on a tech issue" in the 1930s.

To some extent I understand the eye-rolling at nazi comparisons, but at the same time that works in their favor. If the nazi agenda had never taken off, people would eye-roll at criticisms of IBM's role.

It's all "over-reacting" until they actually achieve what they promise to do, then it's "why didn't anyone stop it?"
